How to Convert AVIF to JPG

  1. Add the AVIF files

Drop up to 30 files, or choose them from the picker. Each file can be up to 25MB. A file that is not AVIF still runs if this browser can decode it, and the row says so.

  2. Set quality and the flat color

The slider runs from 50 to 100 and opens at 92. White, black, or a color you pick is painted behind transparent pixels, because JPG cannot store them.

  3. Read the list

Each row shows a thumbnail, the original name, the original size, the new size, and whether that file is ready. One row can fail without stopping the others.

  4. Download

One finished file downloads by itself. Two or more finished files download as a ZIP. Convert again rebuilds the batch after you move the slider or the color.

Turn an AVIF Into a JPG Without Sending the File

An avif to jpg converter belongs on the page where the file already is: this browser. Open the page, drop in one or many AVIF pictures, and each file is decoded and written as a JPEG here. An avif to jpg run does not upload the picture, does not ask you to sign in, and does not stamp a watermark on the download.

AVIF is a newer picture format built on the AV1 video codec. Sites ship it because the same scene often takes fewer bytes than a JPEG. The trouble shows up after you save the picture. A lot of phones, forms, and older desktop apps still expect a JPG, so the file you just saved will not open or will be rejected at upload. This avif to jpg converter is the step between those two worlds. The AVIF article on Wikipedia describes the format itself.

People usually meet AVIF through Save image as. When a site sends AVIF, the file on disk is an AVIF even if the picture on screen looked like any other photo. The name ends in .avif, and that name is what older software chokes on.

After the JPG is ready, a cutout is a different job. The background remover makes a transparent PNG of the subject, and that step does upload the picture. If you need the AVIF's transparency kept instead of flattened, use AVIF to PNG. A WebP that arrived the same way from Save image as can go through WebP to JPG. A subject that should already be a transparent PNG, with the background gone, is the PNG maker.

Where the AVIF File Came From

A camera rarely writes AVIF today. The file on your desktop is usually a download. News sites, shops, and blogs send AVIF to browsers that understand it, and the browser's save command keeps that encoding. The picture did not become AVIF because you asked for it. It became AVIF because that is what the server sent.

Places That Still Will Not Open AVIF

Older copies of the Windows Photos app, and Windows installs that never got the AV1 image support, often show a broken icon or a blank viewer for .avif. Some upload forms accept only JPG or PNG in the file picker. Older Word and PowerPoint documents also fail to place an AVIF, or they place a box where the picture should be. This page does not list those forms by name, because the rule is the form's, not ours.

A JPG is the file those places already know. Converting does not prove a particular form will accept the result. It only means the download is a normal JPEG, with a .jpg name, that you can try in that form yourself.

Transparency, HDR, and the Quality Slider

JPG has no transparent pixels. If the AVIF used transparency, those pixels become the color you picked: white when the page opens, or black, or another color. The color is a flat fill behind the picture. It is not a cutout, and it does not guess what the subject is.

Some AVIF files store more than 8 bits per channel, or a wider range of color than a typical screen JPEG. The download is an ordinary 8-bit JPG. Colors can shift a little when that extra range is squeezed into 8 bits. This page does not keep the extra bit depth, and it does not claim the shift is invisible.

The slider opens at 92, near the top of 50 to 100. Leaving it there keeps more of the picture, and the file stays toward the larger end of what this JPEG encoder will write. Moving it down makes a smaller file and can show block edges, especially in flat sky or soft gradients. There is no single percentage that describes every picture, so the row shows the new size after the file is built.

Before You Download the JPG

  • Check the flat color on a logo

A logo that was transparent will sit on white, black, or your color. Switch the color and choose Convert again if the edge looks wrong.

  • Leave 92 unless the file must be small

92 is a high setting. Drop the slider only when a form or a chat app is refusing a large JPEG, then look at the new size on the row.

  • Odd names still convert

If the row says the file is not AVIF, this browser will still try. A file it cannot decode stays on the list with an error, and the other rows continue.

  • One ZIP, original names

photo.avif becomes photo.jpg. A second file with the same name becomes photo-2.jpg inside the ZIP, so nothing is overwritten.

What This AVIF to JPG Page Does Not Do

These match the current page. The pictures are not uploaded. The download is a new JPEG, not a renamed AVIF.

  • Up to 30 files at a time, and each file up to 25MB. A larger file is refused before conversion.
  • The browser must be able to decode AVIF. If it cannot, the row explains that Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari 16 or later is needed. There is no server fallback.
  • Animated AVIF is not assembled into a motion file. You get one still JPEG from the frame this browser draws.
  • HDR and 10-bit AVIF become 8-bit JPEG. A small color shift is possible. This page does not measure that shift.
  • Transparent pixels are flattened onto the color you pick. The default is white, #ffffff. JPG cannot keep the transparent pixels.
  • Quality opens at 92 on a 50 to 100 slider. The encoder is the browser's canvas JPEG. A second generation of JPEG can add a little blockiness even at 92.
  • If this browser cannot encode JPEG, that row is saved as PNG instead, and the message on the page says so.
  • This page does not remove a background, does not upscale, and does not add a watermark. It also does not install anything.

AVIF to JPG FAQ

Does the AVIF leave my browser?

No. Avif to jpg runs in this browser. The picture is not uploaded, and the JPG is built on this device.

Why do I have AVIF files at all?

Save image as stores whatever the site sent. Many sites send AVIF, so the file on disk is AVIF even though the page just looked like a photo.

Why will some apps not open the AVIF?

Older Windows Photos, some upload forms, and older Office documents often have no AVIF decoder. A JPG is a format they already accept. This page does not name those forms.

What happens to transparent pixels?

JPG cannot store them. They become white, black, or a color you pick. Convert again after you change the color. For a PNG that keeps transparency, use the AVIF to PNG page.

Will colors change?

They can, a little, when a high-bit-depth or wide-range AVIF is written as an 8-bit JPG. This page does not keep that extra range.

Can I convert a folder at once?

Up to 30 files, each up to 25MB. One finished file downloads alone. More than one downloads as a ZIP. There is no watermark and no sign-in.

Is 92 a small or a large JPEG?

92 is near the top of the slider, so the file stays toward the larger end and keeps more detail. Lower numbers make a smaller file and can show block edges. The row shows the size of the file you actually got.
