JFIF to PNG

JFIF to PNG Converter

Convert JFIF to PNG in this browser. The file is a JPEG under a .jfif name. This page decodes it and writes a real PNG, which is usually larger and still opaque. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no watermark.

  • Writes a real PNG
  • Renaming to .png is not enough
  • Batch ZIP, no upload

How to Convert JFIF to PNG

  1. Add the .jfif files

.jpg and .jpeg are accepted too, since they are the same JPEG family. 30 files, 25MB each.

  2. No JPG slider

This page outputs PNG, so quality and the flat color stay hidden. There is nothing to flatten on a normal JPEG.

  3. Read the new size

Expect the PNG to be larger. The row shows both sizes. A failure on one file does not cancel the rest.

  4. Download

One PNG downloads directly. Several PNGs download as a ZIP. The name keeps every dot except the last extension.

A .jfif File Needs a Real PNG, Not a New Extension

Jfif to png is a container change, and the container really does change. JFIF is JPEG. PNG is a different file. This jfif to png converter decodes the JPEG in the browser and writes PNG bytes. The picture is not uploaded. The PNG has no watermark. Up to 30 files can leave as one ZIP.

Renaming photo.jfif to photo.png is the move that looks right and is wrong. The extension changes. The bytes stay JPEG. A program that trusts the name may try to open it and fail, and a program that reads the header will say it is a JPEG. Unlike jfif to jpg, where a rename is often the whole fix, jfif to png cannot be done by renaming. The JPEG article on Wikipedia describes the file you actually have. PNG is the file this page writes.

The PNG is usually larger. JPEG was small because it discarded detail. PNG stores the decoded pixels without discarding more. It also cannot restore detail the JPEG never kept. You get a faithful copy of what the browser decoded, often a heavier file, and that is the trade you asked for when a tool insisted on PNG.

The PNG is opaque. JPEG has no transparent pixels, so the PNG does not grow a transparent background by itself. If you need the subject on a transparent layer, the background remover does that cutout and uploads the picture. If you only needed the name to say .jpg, JFIF to JPG is the smaller edit, and a rename might be enough. An AVIF that already has transparency and should stay a PNG is AVIF to PNG.

What You Actually Have in a .jfif

The extension .jfif shows up when Windows, or an older browser on Windows, saved a JPEG under that suffix. Mail attachments and Save as from a browser are the usual sources. The photo is the same kind of photo as a .jpg from a camera: compressed, opaque, and widely readable once the name looks familiar.

Some software hides .jfif or refuses to import it because the extension is not on its list, even though the same software imports .jpg all day. That is a name filter. A PNG filter is a different filter, and it wants PNG bytes. This page is aimed at the second filter.

Why the PNG Does Not Become Transparent

A JPEG decoder produces opaque pixels. There is no hidden alpha channel waiting in a .jfif. The PNG this page writes is opaque from edge to edge. Viewers that show a checkerboard will not show one here, unless you later edit the PNG somewhere else.

Cutting a person or a product out of that opaque frame is background removal, not format conversion. The background remover on the home page uploads the picture and returns a transparent PNG. Doing both jobs on this page would be a different tool, and this page does not pretend to do it.

Size, and What Re-encoding Cannot Fix

A PNG of a JPEG photo is often much larger than the .jfif. That growth means the PNG is storing pixels plainly, not that the converter repeated the file by mistake. Screenshots and flat graphics grow less than detailed photos. The row is the measurement for the file you added. This page will not quote a percentage.

Block edges that are already in the JPEG stay in the PNG. Conversion does not denoise and does not sharpen. If the .jfif was a heavy recompress, the PNG preserves that look exactly, which is what you want for a faithful copy and not what you want if you hoped the picture would get cleaner.

Before You Convert a Folder of .jfif

  • Confirm you need PNG

If the next step only disliked the extension, rename to .jpg or use the JFIF to JPG page. PNG is the heavier file.

  • Do not rename to .png

Keep this page for the real encode. A renamed JPEG will fail a PNG header check.

  • Leave the original

The .jfif is the smaller archive copy. The PNG is the copy other tools accept.

  • Batch names

    scan.jfif becomes scan.png. my.scan.jfif becomes my.scan.png.

Limits of JFIF to PNG

Conversion stays in the browser. The PNG does not gain transparency and does not gain detail.

  • 30 files, 25MB each. .jfif, .jpg, and .jpeg are the expected names.
  • Renaming .jfif to .png is not a conversion. This page is.
  • The PNG is opaque. JPEG has no alpha channel to keep.
  • The PNG is often larger. That is normal, and the amount depends on the picture.
  • JPEG blockiness is preserved, not repaired.
  • A file this browser cannot decode produces an error on that row. Other files continue.
  • This page does not remove a background and does not upload the picture.

JFIF to PNG FAQ

Is a JFIF already a PNG?

No. It is a JPEG with a .jfif extension. Jfif to png decodes that JPEG and writes a PNG.

Can I rename .jfif to .png?

You can change the letters, and the file will still be a JPEG. Use this page when something has to read a PNG header.

Will the PNG be transparent?

No. A JPEG has no transparent pixels, so the PNG is opaque. The background remover is the tool that cuts a subject out, and it uploads the picture.

Why did the file get bigger?

PNG stores the decoded pixels without JPEG's squeeze. A bigger file is the usual result. How much bigger depends on the photo.

Are the files uploaded?

No. The PNG is built in this browser. There is no watermark and no account.

How do I convert a batch?

Add up to 30 files, 25MB each. One PNG downloads alone. More than one downloads as a ZIP.

Convert JFIF to PNG Here

Drop .jfif files. They stay in the browser. The download is a real PNG, or a ZIP of them.

More in the toolbox

Remove the background on the homepage when the subject should be a transparent PNG.
