How to Blur an Image

  1. Choose a photo

JPG, PNG, or WebP up to 25MB, at most 8,192 px on a side, and at most 24 megapixels. The file stays in this browser.

  2. Pick where to blur

Whole photo is selected first. Or draw one or more boxes. A box under 12 px on either side is ignored.

  3. Set the strength

1 px to 40 px, step 1 px. 12 px is the start. Gaussian or motion. Motion also has an angle, 0° to 180°.

  4. Download PNG or JPG

The file matches the upright pixel size. It has no watermark. Look again before you share it. A blur can still be recognizable.

Blur an Image Without Uploading It

Blur image online free on this page. Open it in a phone or computer browser, choose a JPG, PNG, or WebP, and the blur is drawn here. The photo is not uploaded. Blur image online here means a Gaussian blur or a motion blur, on the whole frame or on boxes you draw. The full-size PNG or JPG is free and has no watermark.

The strength is a slider, from 1 px to 40 px on the full photo, in steps of 1 px. 12 px is selected when the page opens. Gaussian uses that number as the blur sigma. Motion blur uses it as the streak on each side of a pixel, and the angle runs from 0° to 180° in steps of 1°. 0° is selected first. 0° is horizontal, 90° is vertical, and 180° matches 0° because the streak has no front or back. A blur may not stop someone from recognizing a face or reading large text. For sensitive details, cover them with a solid color. This page does not promise anonymity, and it does not claim the file meets a privacy rule or a platform rule.

The download is the upright photo at its own pixel size. You choose PNG or JPG. JPEG is re-encoded at quality 0.92. PNG is not. There is no watermark and no credit. To leave the subject sharp and only soften the room, blur the background of a photo. To cover faces and leave the rest sharp, blur a face in a photo. To cover a spot with a mosaic or a solid color, pixelate an image. A shaky photo that should be sharper is unblur an image. Background blur and unblur upload the photo, and the full-size file there is paid.

When a Blur Fits

A whole photo

Soften every pixel. The file keeps the same pixel size.

A license plate or a sign

Draw a box. Add another box if there is a second spot. A finger works on a phone.

A streak instead of a soft spot

Motion blur follows the angle you set. It is a smear, not a portrait-mode background.

Before you post

Download the PNG or JPG, then post that file. This page does not open another app.

Before You Download

  • Turn the strength up when it matters

1 px on a large face can still be recognizable. Move the slider toward 40 px.

  • Use a solid color for secrets

A blur is not a cover. A plate, a face, or a line of text can remain readable. The solid color on the pixelate page is the flatter cover.

  • Phone photos

A JPEG from the phone is rotated to the way it looks on screen, including the EXIF orientation. HEIC is not accepted. Export a JPEG or PNG from the phone first.

  • The room is a different page

This page blurs what you select, including the subject if it is inside the box. Blur the background of a photo keeps the subject and blurs the room. That one uploads the photo.

Limits

These match the current page. The photo is not uploaded. A blur is not a promise of anonymity.

  • JPG, PNG, or WebP only, up to 25MB, at most 8,192 px on a side, and at most 24 megapixels. A larger file is refused so the full-size export can finish in the browser. HEIC is not accepted.
  • On screen the preview's long side is at most 1,400 px. The download uses the full upright photo, not that preview. Strength below is pixels on that full photo. On screen it is scaled by the preview width over the photo width, and it is never under 1 px.
  • The strength slider runs from 1 px to 40 px in steps of 1 px. 12 px is selected when the page opens. For a Gaussian blur, that number is the sigma.
  • If this browser's canvas filter really blurs, Gaussian uses that filter at the same sigma. The check paints a 5×1 strip, puts one white pixel in the middle, applies blur(2px), and reads a neighbor. A neighbor that stays black means the filter did nothing.
  • When the filter does nothing, including Safari before canvas filters, Gaussian falls back to three box-blur passes. Each pass is a horizontal sliding window and a vertical one. The box widths are the standard three-box approximation of that sigma. Those pixels are not identical to the browser filter.
  • Motion blur is always computed here. Canvas filters have no motion blur. 0° is horizontal and 90° is vertical. The angle slider runs from 0° to 180° in steps of 1°. 0° is selected when the page opens. 180° matches 0°.
  • The motion streak reaches the strength in pixels on each side of a pixel. Up to 12 px, every pixel along that line is averaged. Above 12 px, samples are spaced so there are at most 25. That cap is what lets a large photo finish in the browser.
  • A drawn box under 12 px on either side is ignored. You can add more than one box. Dragging on the photo does not scroll the page. The blur inside a box is sampled from the original pixels, including pixels just outside the box, and pixels outside every box stay sharp.
  • JPEG downloads are re-encoded at quality 0.92. PNG is not. A JPG is flattened on white. A PNG keeps the alpha the file already had.
  • A blur can leave a face, a plate, or large text recognizable. A higher strength hides more and still may not be enough. For something sensitive, use a solid color. Neither a blur nor a mosaic makes a person impossible to recognize, and neither one is a compliance claim.
  • This page does not install an app, does not call a model, does not upload the photo, and does not sharpen a shaky photo.

Blur Image FAQ

Does the photo leave my browser?

No. The Gaussian blur, the motion blur, and the download are created in this browser. The photo is not uploaded. Nothing is sent to a server to be blurred.

How do I blur a photo?

Open this page, choose a JPG, PNG, or WebP, leave Whole photo selected, set the strength, and download a PNG or JPG. Blur photo here means the file stays in the browser. Nothing is installed.

Can I blur part of image?

Yes. Choose Draw boxes and drag one or more rectangles. Blur part of image leaves the pixels outside those boxes sharp. A box under 12 px is ignored. On a phone, drag with a finger. The page does not scroll while the drag is on the photo.

How do I blur a picture?

Blur picture is the same job as blur image on this page. Choose the picture, pick Gaussian or motion, and download. The picture is not uploaded. HEIC is not accepted. Export a JPEG or PNG from the phone first.

What is the difference between Gaussian blur and motion blur?

Gaussian is a soft circular blur. The slider is the sigma, from 1 px to 40 px, and 12 px is the start. Motion blur smears along an angle. 0° is horizontal, 90° is vertical, and the angle runs to 180°. Up to 12 px, every pixel on the line is averaged. Above that, there are at most 25 samples.

Will a blur stop someone from recognizing a face or reading text?

No. A blur can leave a face, a plate, or large text recognizable, and a low strength is easier to read. For sensitive details, use a solid color on the pixelate page. This page does not promise anonymity, and it does not claim the file meets any privacy rule.

Is the full-size download free?

Yes. The PNG or JPG is the upright photo at its own pixel size, with no watermark and no credit. JPEG is re-encoded at quality 0.92. PNG is not. There is no paid download on this page.

When should I use another tool?

To keep the subject sharp and soften the room, blur the background of a photo. To cover faces and leave the rest sharp, blur a face in a photo. To hide a spot with a mosaic or a solid color, pixelate an image. To sharpen light camera shake, unblur an image. Background blur and unblur upload the photo, and the full-size file there is paid.
