How to Pixelate an Image

  1. Choose a photo

JPG, PNG, or WebP up to 25MB, at most 8,192 px on a side, and at most 24 megapixels. The file stays in this browser.

  2. Pick where to cover

Whole photo is selected first. Draw one or more boxes, or turn on Faces after the photo is open.

  3. Set the block size

4 px to 96 px, step 2 px. 20 px is the start. Or switch to a solid color, #111111 unless you change it.

  4. Download PNG or JPG

The file matches the upright pixel size. It has no watermark. Look again before you share it. A mosaic can still be recognizable.

Pixelate an Image Without Uploading It

Pixelate image online free on this page. Open it in a phone or computer browser, choose a JPG, PNG, or WebP, and the mosaic is drawn here. The photo is not uploaded. You can pixelate the whole frame, pixelate face areas the detector finds, censor image detail such as a plate or a sign, or make a mosaic photo. The full-size PNG or JPG is free and has no watermark.

The block size is a slider, from 4 px to 96 px on the full photo, in steps of 2 px. 20 px is selected when the page opens. Three places can be covered: the whole photo, one or more boxes you draw, or faces found after you turn on Faces. Face detection downloads only after you choose a photo and turn Faces on. A mosaic may not stop someone from recognizing a face or reading large text. For sensitive details, use a larger block or a solid color. This page does not promise anonymity, and it does not claim the file meets a privacy rule or a platform rule.

The download is the upright photo at its own pixel size. You choose PNG or JPG. JPEG is re-encoded at quality 0.92. PNG is not. There is no watermark and no credit. To blur a face and leave the rest of the photo sharp, blur a face in a photo. To leave the subject sharp and only soften the room, blur the background of a photo. To blur the whole photo or a box without a mosaic, blur an image. To cut the subject out, use remove the background. To enlarge a small photo, use the image upscaler. Those two upload the photo, and the full-size file there is paid.

When a Mosaic Fits

A whole photo

Cover every pixel with blocks. The rest of the file size stays the same.

A license plate or a sign

Draw a box. Add another box if there is a second spot. A finger works on a phone.

A face

Turn on Faces, or draw a box if one was missed. This does not remove the person.

Before you post

Download the PNG or JPG, then post that file. This page does not open another app.

Before You Download

  • Use a larger block when it matters

A 4 px block on a large face can still be recognizable. Move the slider toward 96 px, or use the solid color.

  • Solid color hides more

The solid cover is flat and opaque. The default is #111111. It still is not a promise that someone cannot guess what was there.

  • Phone photos

A JPEG from the phone is rotated to the way it looks on screen, including the EXIF orientation. HEIC is not accepted. Export a JPEG or PNG from the phone first.

  • A blur is a different page

This page does not soften a face with a blur and does not blur the background. Blur a face in a photo or blur the background of a photo.

Limits

These match the current page. The photo is not uploaded. A mosaic is not a promise of anonymity.

  • JPG, PNG, or WebP only, up to 25MB, at most 8,192 px on a side, and at most 24 megapixels. A larger file is refused so the full-size export can finish in the browser. HEIC is not accepted.
  • On screen the preview's long side is at most 1,400 px. The download uses the full upright photo, not that preview. Block sizes below are pixels on that full photo.
  • The block size slider runs from 4 px to 96 px in steps of 2 px. 20 px is selected when the page opens. Each block is the average color of the pixels inside it, with a hard edge.
  • The solid color is #111111 until you change it. It is opaque. It does not use the block size.
  • A drawn box under 12 px on either side is ignored. You can add more than one box. Dragging on the photo does not scroll the page.
  • Faces are optional. The detector is MediaPipe Tasks Vision 1.1.1 with blaze_face_full_range float16 (model version 1). It runs on the CPU only after you choose a photo and turn on Faces.
  • Faces are looked for on a view whose long side is at most 1,024 px. A larger photo is also split into at most 9 overlapping tiles, plus one view of the whole photo. A mapped face under 12 px is ignored. A score under 0.5 is ignored.
  • Each detected box is expanded by 18% on every side, then clipped to the photo. A face that is missed is not covered until you draw a box.
  • The face-detector download is 15,093,975 bytes. JPEG downloads are re-encoded at quality 0.92. PNG is not.
  • If the model or the runtime cannot load, automatic detection stops and you draw a box. The photo is still not uploaded.
  • Safari before 16.4 has no WASM SIMD. This page ships the SIMD runtime only. On those browsers detection does not load, and you draw boxes by hand.
  • A mosaic can leave a face, a plate, or large text recognizable. A larger block or a solid color hides more. Neither one makes a person impossible to recognize, and neither one is a compliance claim.
  • This page does not install an app, does not change a menu inside Photos or Instagram, and does not soften the background.

Pixelate Image FAQ

Does the photo leave my browser?

No. The mosaic, the solid color, and the download are created in this browser. The photo is not uploaded. The face-detection runtime, 15,093,975 bytes, downloads only after you choose a photo and turn on Faces.

How do I pixelate an image online?

Open this page, choose a JPG, PNG, or WebP, set the block size, and download a PNG or JPG. Whole photo is selected first. Nothing is installed, and the photo is not uploaded.

Can I pixelate only part of a photo?

Yes. Choose Draw boxes and drag one or more rectangles. A box under 12 px is ignored. On a phone, drag with a finger. The page does not scroll while the drag is on the photo.

Can this pixelate a face automatically?

Turn on Faces after the photo is open. The same MediaPipe Tasks Vision 1.1.1 blaze_face_full_range check used by the face-blur page runs in this browser. Each face can be turned off. A missed face is covered by drawing a box. The photo is still not uploaded.

Will a mosaic stop someone from recognizing a face or reading text?

No. A mosaic can leave a face or large text recognizable, and a small block is easier to interpret. For sensitive details, use a larger block or the solid color. The default solid color is #111111. This page does not promise anonymity, and it does not claim the file meets any privacy rule.

Is the full-size download free?

Yes. The PNG or JPG is the upright photo at its own pixel size, with no watermark and no credit. JPEG is re-encoded at quality 0.92. PNG is not.

What if I need the background removed or the photo larger?

Use remove the background, or the image upscaler. Those pages upload the photo, and the full-size file there is paid. To blur a face and leave the rest sharp, blur a face in a photo. To soften the room, blur the background of a photo.

How do I pixelate a photo on an iPhone?

Open this page in Safari or Chrome on the iPhone and choose a JPEG or PNG. HEIC is not accepted. Drag a box with a finger, turn on Faces, or pixelate the whole photo, then download. The photo stays in the browser. This is not a control inside the Photos app, and there is no app to install.
