How to Convert AVIF to PNG

  1. Add AVIF files

Up to 30 files, each up to 25MB. Files that are not AVIF still run when the browser can decode them, and the row tells you the name did not match.

  2. No quality slider

PNG does not use a JPEG quality setting, and it does not need a flat color. Those controls stay hidden on this page.

  3. Watch each row

Thumbnail, original name, original size, new size, and status. A PNG that is larger than the AVIF is expected.

  4. Download the PNG or the ZIP

One file downloads directly. Several files download as one ZIP. Names keep the part before the last dot, with .png on the end.

Keep the AVIF Picture, Write a PNG

Avif to png is the conversion you want when the next tool asks for PNG, or when the AVIF used transparency and a JPEG would paint over it. This avif to png converter decodes each file in the browser and writes a PNG. The picture is not uploaded. The download has no watermark, and you do not need an account.

PNG is a lossless still-image format. Once the browser has decoded the AVIF, the PNG stores those pixels without a second lossy pass. The file is often larger than the AVIF. That growth is normal: AVIF was built to be small, and PNG was built to keep every pixel. This page does not promise a particular ratio, because it depends on the picture.

You still get AVIF files the same way as on the JPG page: a site sent AVIF, and Save image as kept it. Logos, stickers, and interface art are the files that most often need PNG rather than JPG, because a flat color behind them would show a box. The AVIF article on Wikipedia is a short account of why sites send this format.

A PNG from this page keeps whatever transparency the AVIF already had. It does not invent a cutout. If the subject should be lifted off a real background, the background remover makes that transparent PNG, and that tool uploads the picture. A JPEG-style file from the same AVIF is AVIF to JPG. WebP artwork with transparency can go through WebP to PNG.

Why PNG Instead of Renaming the AVIF

Changing .avif to .png does not change the bytes. A program that reads the file header still sees AVIF and rejects it. This page decodes the picture and writes a PNG header and PNG pixels, so the file is a PNG rather than an AVIF with a new name.

That decode step is also why a very new or unusual AVIF can fail in an old browser. The row then says this browser cannot open AVIF and points you at a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari 16 or later. Nothing is sent away to be decoded on a server.

Transparency Is Kept, and So Is the Rest of the Frame

If the AVIF has an alpha channel, the PNG keeps it. Checkerboard areas in a viewer are transparent pixels, not white. If the AVIF was fully opaque, the PNG is fully opaque too. This page does not knock out a background color.

Apps that refuse AVIF and accept PNG include a lot of design tools, older slide decks, and upload forms that list PNG next to JPG. Whether a given form accepts your file is still that form's rule. The download is only a PNG you can try there.

The File Gets Bigger, and HDR Becomes 8-bit

A larger PNG is not a failed conversion. AVIF spends bits on being small. PNG spends bits on storing pixels without throwing any away after the decode. The row's new size is the honest result for that picture. Soft photos grow a lot. Flat logos grow less, and sometimes not much at all.

High-bit-depth AVIF and wide-range color are drawn through the browser canvas, which writes an ordinary 8-bit PNG. A slight color change is possible. This page does not keep 10-bit samples and does not attach a color-profile essay to the file. If you needed the AVIF's full range, keep the original next to the PNG.

When the PNG Is the Right Download

  • Logos and stickers

If you can see through part of the AVIF, stay on this page. The JPG page would fill those pixels.

  • Expect a bigger file

Do not retry the conversion hoping the PNG will match the AVIF's size. The growth is the cost of a lossless file.

  • Keep the AVIF

The original is still the high-bit-depth copy if the source was 10-bit. This PNG is the portable copy.

  • Batch names

my.photo.avif becomes my.photo.png. Two files that would share a name get -2, -3, and so on inside the ZIP.

Limits of AVIF to PNG

The pictures stay on this device. The PNG is a new file, not a renamed AVIF.

  • 30 files, 25MB each. Extra files are left out, and the page says it kept the first 30.
  • A browser that cannot decode AVIF cannot build the PNG. Update Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari 16 or later and try again.
  • Animation is not preserved. You get the still frame this browser decodes, which is the first frame in current browsers.
  • 10-bit and wide-range AVIF are written as 8-bit PNG. Color can shift slightly.
  • Transparency is copied, not created. An opaque photo stays opaque.
  • There is no JPEG quality slider on this page, because PNG is not a JPEG.
  • This page does not cut the subject out. A transparent subject on a removed background is a different tool, and that tool uploads the picture.

AVIF to PNG FAQ

Is avif to png done on a server?

No. The decode and the PNG are made in this browser. The file is not uploaded.

Why is the PNG bigger than the AVIF?

PNG keeps the decoded pixels without a lossy squeeze. AVIF was small on purpose. A larger PNG is the normal result, and the amount depends on the picture.

Does transparency survive?

Yes, when the AVIF had transparent pixels. They stay transparent in the PNG. This page does not paint a background color.

Can I just rename .avif to .png?

No. The bytes would still be AVIF. Programs that check the file header would reject it. This page writes a real PNG.

What about HDR AVIF?

The PNG is 8-bit. Extra bit depth and wide color can look slightly different. Keep the AVIF if you still need that range.

How many files can I add?

Up to 30, each up to 25MB. One PNG downloads alone. More than one downloads as a ZIP with no watermark.

Convert AVIF to PNG Here

Drop AVIF files. They stay in the browser. The PNG keeps transparency and has no watermark.
