How to Blur a Face in a Photo
Choose a photo
JPG, PNG, or WebP up to 25MB, at most 8,192 px on a side, and at most 24 megapixels. The file stays in this browser.
Faces are marked
BlazeFace full-range looks for faces. Turn any face off. A miss can be covered with a box or the brush.
Pick blur or pixelate
Light, Medium, or Strong. Medium is selected when the photo opens. Pixelate uses hard-edged blocks.
Download the full photo
The file matches the input format and the upright pixel size. It has no watermark. Look again for a missed face first.
Blur a Face Without Uploading the Photo
Blur face in photo online free on this page. Open it in a phone or computer browser, choose a JPG, PNG, or WebP, and the face blur effect is drawn here. The photo is not uploaded. A face-detection model downloads only after you choose a photo. That download is 15,093,975 bytes (about 15MB) the first time. The version is in the file address, so the browser can cache it for a year.
Blur face online here means each detected face can be turned on or off. The effect is a blur or hard-edged blocks, in three strengths. If a face is missed, draw a rectangle or paint with the brush. Check the photo before you download. A light blur can sometimes be sharpened again. A strong blur or pixelate is harder to undo. Neither one makes a person impossible to recognize.
The download keeps the photo's pixel size. JPG in, JPG out. PNG in, PNG out. WebP in, WebP out, unless this browser cannot encode WebP, in which case the download is a PNG at the same pixel size. JPEG and WebP are re-encoded at quality 0.92. There is no watermark and no credit. To leave the faces sharp and only soften the room, blur the background of a photo. To remove someone instead of covering them, use remove a person from a photo. To pixelate a whole photo, a box you draw, or a face, pixelate an image. That page stays in the browser too. To blur the whole photo or a box, rather than only a face, blur an image.
When Covering a Face Fits
A stranger in the frame
Cover that face and leave the rest of the photo sharp. This does not remove the person.
A group photo
Each face has its own switch. Leave the people you want visible.
Before you post
Download the file, then post that file. This page does not open Instagram, Photos, or any other app.
A face the detector missed
Draw a box or paint over it. Very small faces in a large photo are the usual miss.
Before You Download
Look for a missed face
Profile faces, covered faces, and very small faces can be skipped. The box and the brush are there for that.
Prefer a strong cover when it matters
A light blur can sometimes be sharpened again. A strong blur or pixelate is harder to undo. This is not a promise that someone cannot be recognized.
Phone photos
A JPEG from the phone is rotated to the way it looks on screen, including the EXIF orientation. HEIC is not accepted. Export a JPEG or PNG from the phone first.
The room is a different page
This page does not soften the background. Blur the background of a photo keeps the subject and blurs the room.
Limits
These match the current page. The photo is not uploaded. The blur is not a promise of anonymity.
- JPG, PNG, or WebP only, up to 25MB, at most 8,192 px on a side, and at most 24 megapixels. A larger file is refused so the full-size export can finish in the browser. HEIC is not accepted.
- On screen the preview's long side is at most 1,400 px. The download uses the full upright photo, not that preview.
- The detector is MediaPipe Tasks Vision 1.1.1 with blaze_face_full_range float16 (model version 1). It is the full-range model, not the short-range selfie model. Detection runs on the CPU after you choose a photo.
- Faces are looked for on a view whose long side is at most 1,024 px. A larger photo is also split into at most 9 overlapping tiles, plus one view of the whole photo. A mapped face under 12 px is ignored. A score under 0.5 is ignored.
- Each detected box is expanded by 18% on every side, then clipped to the photo.
- Light blur is 8% of that face's shorter side, Medium is 18%, and Strong is 36%. The radius stays between 2 px and 96 px. Medium is the default.
- Light pixelate blocks are 8% of that face's shorter side, Medium is 14%, and Strong is 24%. The block stays between 6 px and 72 px.
- The brush width starts at 4% of the photo's shorter side. You can set it from 1% to 12%. Brush blur is 1.2% of that shorter side at Light, 2.5% at Medium, and 5% at Strong, and stays between 2 px and 48 px. Brush pixel blocks use those same percentages and stay between 4 px and 36 px.
- The face-detector download is 15,093,975 bytes. JPEG and WebP downloads are re-encoded at quality 0.92. PNG is not.
- If the model or the runtime cannot load, automatic detection stops and you draw a box or use the brush. The photo is still not uploaded.
- Safari before 16.4 has no WASM SIMD. This page ships the SIMD runtime only. On those browsers detection does not load, and you cover faces by hand.
- This page does not install an app, does not change a menu inside Photos or Instagram, and does not soften the background.
