How to Convert SVG to PNG

  1. Drop the SVG files

Up to 30, each up to 25MB. A file whose name is not .svg still converts if the browser can draw it, and the row says so.

  2. Pick 1×, 2×, 4×, or a width

2× is already selected. Custom width is 16 to 8192 pixels, and the height follows the drawing. Past 8192 on a side, or past 40 million pixels, the page shrinks the PNG and says so.

  3. Convert again after a size change

The first drop uses the size selected then. Changing 2× to 4× does not rewrite a PNG that is already done. Choose Convert again.

  4. Save one PNG or a ZIP

One success downloads as that PNG. Several download as a ZIP named for svg-to-png and the file count. There is no watermark.

A Drawing, Saved as a PNG, Without an Upload

Svg to png is the step between a logo file and a picture a form, a slide, or an app listing will accept. This svg to png converter reads each SVG on this device and paints a PNG here. The file is not uploaded. The PNG is free, at the pixel size you pick, and has no watermark. Up to 30 files can leave as one ZIP.

SVG stores shapes, not a grid of pixels. A PNG already has a width and a height because every pixel is stored. An SVG stores paths, and the pixel size is chosen when a program paints it. A file that looks sharp on a phone can be a 24 by 24 icon in the markup, so there is no original pixel size to recover. The Scalable Vector Graphics article on Wikipedia describes the format. This page still has to pick a pixel size before it can write a PNG. The section after the steps says which numbers it uses.

The PNG keeps the empty background a logo usually has. It does not cut a subject out of a photograph. For a photo, the background remover makes that transparent PNG, and that tool uploads the picture. A PNG that needs a plain white backdrop can go to make background white. A WebP with the same problem is WebP to PNG, and an AVIF is AVIF to PNG. A finished transparent PNG for a product shot is the PNG maker.

Why an SVG Has No Original Pixel Size

Width and height are the viewport: how big the drawing asks to be when something paints it. 120 or 120px counts. 100%, 10em, and 210mm do not. This page treats those units as missing. It does not guess how many pixels a millimeter is, and it does not read a percentage as the width of your window. Both attributes have to be plain pixels. One percentage and one pixel value means the pair is ignored.

The viewBox is the coordinate system. viewBox="0 0 24 24" means the paths live in a square 24 units across. It does not say the PNG is 24 pixels. It says how the shapes are laid out. When width and height are missing or are not pixels, this page uses the viewBox width and height as 1×. Only the root svg element counts, not a shape inside it.

The order is fixed. Plain width and height win, even if a viewBox is also there. Otherwise the viewBox is 1×. If the file has neither, 1× is 512 by 512, which is a fallback, not a measurement. A 24-unit icon at 1× is 24 pixels. 2× makes it 48. Custom width is how you ask for 1024 without pretending the file stored that number.

Where 2× and 4× Belong

2× is the default because many icons use a small viewBox and then sit on a screen with two device pixels per CSS pixel. A Retina laptop, a recent phone, and an @2x app slot all want that doubling. 2× paints the extra pixels while the shapes are still vectors.

4× fits an @3x or @4x slot, a store icon the platform will scale down, or a print file that needs more pixels than a screen. Print is pixels per inch, not a multiplier. A mark two inches wide at 300 pixels per inch needs about 600 pixels across. If 4× of the viewBox is short of that, type the width. Height stays in proportion.

App icons should not stay on 2×. A listing often asks for a specific square, such as 1024 pixels. Set Custom width to that number and choose Convert again. The page adds no padding. A drawing that is not square stays not square. A width that would pass the canvas limit is reduced, and the size row says so.

The Empty Parts Stay Empty

Most logos in SVG have no background rectangle. The empty parts are transparent, and the PNG keeps them transparent. On a colored slide you see the slide, not a white box this converter painted.

This is not a background remover. A white rectangle drawn in the SVG stays, because it is part of the artwork. To put a photo subject on white, use the white-background page linked above. Use this svg to png page when the graphic was already meant to float.

Practical Notes for SVG to PNG

  • Do not rename .svg to .png

The file would still be SVG. This page writes PNG bytes.

  • Outline the type first

A font loaded from the web can vanish, because an SVG opened as an image does not fetch it. Convert the text to paths, then convert svg to png.

  • Icons need a width

A 24-unit icon at 2× is 48 pixels. Type the size the slot asks for under Custom width.

  • Names with extra dots

logo.final.svg becomes logo.final.png. Only the last extension changes.

Limits

Svg to png never uploads the file. SVG drawn as an image still follows the browser's rules.

  • 30 files maximum, 25MB each.
  • External fonts and external images may not appear. An SVG in an img element does not load other files. The MDN page on SVG as an image says scripts are disabled and external resources are not fetched. Outline the text, and embed artwork in the file, before you convert.
  • Scripts do not run. Animation is not played. The PNG is a still of the first frame.
  • A side over 8192 pixels, or a picture over 40 million pixels, is scaled down. The size row says so.
  • Percent, em, mm, and similar units are ignored. The viewBox is used, or 512 by 512 when there is no viewBox.
  • This page does not remove a background and does not paint one. A photo that needs a cutout belongs on the background remover, which uploads the picture.
  • A file this browser cannot draw shows an error on that row. Other rows continue. There is no quality slider, because the output is PNG.

SVG to PNG FAQ

Does svg to png upload the file?

No. The browser builds the PNG on this device. The download has no watermark.

Why is there no original pixel size?

SVG stores shapes. Plain width and height are 1×. The viewBox is used only when those are missing or are not pixels. If both are missing, 1× is 512 by 512.

What are 1×, 2×, and 4× for?

1× is the size from the file. 2×, the default, suits a Retina screen and an @2x asset. 4× suits a denser screen or print. Custom width is 16 to 8192 pixels, and the height follows.

Is the transparent background kept?

Yes. Empty parts stay transparent. A white shape that is actually drawn in the file is kept.

Why did the letters or a picture disappear?

The SVG probably points at a font or an image in another file. An image element does not fetch those. Outline the text, or embed the picture, and convert again.

What happens to animation and scripts?

They are not run. You get one still PNG of the first frame. Keep the SVG if you need the motion.

Can I convert a batch, and is there a size cap?

Up to 30 files, 25MB each. More than one PNG downloads as a ZIP. Past 8192 pixels on a side, or 40 million pixels, the result is scaled down.

Convert SVG to PNG in the Browser

Drop SVG files. They are not uploaded. Pick a size, then download a PNG or a ZIP with no watermark.
